Brian McLaren: An Old Kind of Liberal

The last shreds of emergent leader Brian McLaren’s sheep costume have been torn away. The fangs are beginning to show. He’s not progressive, he’s not new–his material is extremely old. It goes all the way back to the Garden when Satan first questioned what God had said. McLaren’s latest book, A New Kind of Christianity, is his newest assault on Scripture and cardinal Christian doctrine. The Stand to Reason blog features a helpful review of the book and Apprising Ministries has several articles on the book, one of which is here. What McLaren is doing is simply repackaging the same lies of liberalism from the past. He is the second coming of Harry Emerson Fosdick. Little more needs to be said.

Mr. McLaren's current book is actually “A New Kind of Christianity.” The title Ms. Schleuter mentions in this post, “A New Kind of Christian” is indeed a McLaren book, just not his current one. I think this newest book is his most helpful one, because as Ms. Schleuter points out in this article, it shows quite clearly that McLaren's beliefs fall outside of what is Christian. This was evident from his earlier books as well, but with the current book, even those with no discernment can see what is really going on. I think what Mr. McLaren needs at this point is for his publishing companies (Zondervan, Thomas Nelson) and his friends (if any are Christians) to rebuke and correct him, and if that doesn't work, treat him as an unbeliever. He needs church discipline, for his own good.

Thanks, Jeff. I've fixed the typo!

Those emergent's pride themselves on being cutting edge and hip to the world. Who better to know what the world wants than “the world” itself. They speak the same language because they are the same. At least there's nothing subtle about their deception, that's a mighty profound hole to fall into, a person would have to fling their self into that one.

Anyone who claims that The Slice has been too hard on Brian McLaren ought to read a summary of “A New Kind of Christianity”. It's beyond heretical.

I don't think McLaren can, at this point, repent of his heresy. He has made a name for himself because of it. To repent now is to sacrifice that name, to admit he was wrong. I want him to, but I don't think it will happen.
