Yesterday’s Crosstalk featured Dr. E. Calvin Beisner, spokesman for the Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation.
Dr. Beisner noted on the show that the current cold snap that our hemisphere has been experiencing over the last several months is consistent with a trend that’s been observable for about the last 14 years. In other words, there has been no significant increase in global average temperature over the last 14 years. In fact there’s been a cooling trend over the last 8 years. This can be explained by reference to a quieting period of the sun (fewer sun spots), less solar wind and a change in the major ocean currents that shift from warm to cool about every 20 to 30 years.
In spite of this, the Copenhagen Climate Summit came to the conclusion that it’s a good idea to keep global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels. Dr. Beisner described this as meaningless because the summit didn’t bind any nations to any particular steps to achieve that through enforcement efforts or commitments.
