Carrie Prejean, Sexting and a Lost Generation

Rebecca Hagelin has written a fine column on Carrie Prejean and the release of her new book. (The new book has Prejean doing the media rounds.) Hagelin gives credit where it is due, but points out the obvious—that you can’t tell the world that your goal is to be a Victoria’s Secret angel and hope to have credibility when you proclaim your Christian faith.

The issue for Carrie is not so much the past as it is the present. As I have repeatedly stated on Crosstalk as late as last week, you cannot profess to be a Christian and demand respect for your supposedly pro-family views when you’ve been cavorting in a naked fashion in front of millions of men. Breast-enhancement surgery for purposes of engendering male lust is no way to represent Jesus Christ.

Pro-family leaders (primarily male) made fools of themselves by publicly championing Carrie as the new face (and body) of conservative values. This was clearly a mistake. Featuring Carrie at the Values Voter Summit just before the sex tape announcement was rather ironic. “Nothing is private,” complained Carrie in a TV interview last week. No, Carrie, not even privates are private.

For the sake of Carrie’s soul, somebody needs to explain the rudiments of the biblical gospel to her. (Family values are not the gospel.) Her mentor can move on from there to help her understand biblical modesty and decency. Christ has been mocked and shamed, not because Carrie stood up for traditional marriage, but because she did so in a barely-there bikini.

*Update – Todd Rhoades of the Monday Morning Insight ministry blog evidently didn’t like my quote below that surgical breast enhancement is not a good way to represent Jesus Christ so he tweeted a snarky tweet on Twitter. So does Mr. Rhoades feel that surgical breast enhancement for the purpose of male is a good way to represent Jesus Christ? I’m interested in that line of thought. Does he have a wife? Does she know what her husband is saying on Twitter? Is she OK with that tweet? Do the “ministry” guys who follow Mr. Rhoades also follow the breast enhancement ministry line of thought? Just asking. (Todd has been a long time critic, for those who wonder.)*

The latest news is there may be as many as 15 “sex” tapes which she did at age 20 (not as a “teen” as she said)! I was appalled to see Hannity sticking up for this (for lack of a better word) bimbo on his show last week! This girl is extremely unintelligent and inarticulate and I can't fathom why conservative Christian organizations fell all over themselves to hold her up as a champion for their cause! They look extremely foolish now and give the liberal media more ammunition to mock and deride Christianity.

Hannity made several jokes about how bad it would be if HE had made a sex tape, but he he, not Carrie. (She's beautiful, you see.) He disgusted me. This is the CONSERVATIVE media. If you have a great body, you can get away even with porn now. It makes you wonder where the minds of these men actually are, off hours. Or, for that matter, during business hours.

Harsh words, but I'm afraid I have to agree. Most of all, I'm glad you make the distinction between family values and the gospel. This is proof not just that her church failed her, but that conservative Christians have their values in disarray. Family values, if not tied to one's faith in Christ and discipleship, are not worth toting.

    Ingrid..
God bless you for your totally truthful and Biblical review of this sordid tabloid embarassment posing as a champion of Christian values.
Carrie could only be held up as such a champion by postmodern churchmen who have long ago lost anything closely resembling Biblical discernment and their reasonable service and spiritual need to lift high the name and testimony of The Lord Jesus Christ as His ambassadors.
All we have today is a few valiant women and faithful men yet to be discovered.
Wish it wasnt so…but wishin dont make it so.

I also am beginning to wonder if this whole Carrie Prejean thing is not a well planned hell-sent means to systematically discredit Christianity ….with every other month having some new sordid detail come out that would make millions say…”wow…them christians are all flamin hypocrites… I could see where that would serve the antichrist agenda real well.
Wouldnt put it past Lou Charles Fer.

It seems much more likely to me that Prejean is just someone that, like many in our culture, hasn’t quite thought out the ways in which her professional goals might not be compatible with her faith. Calling this a conspiracy might be giving her intelligence more credit than it’s due.

I don’t have a major point to make with the following, simply an observation. We don’t need to get all worked up over “conservatives” who don’t promote Christ like standards. Too often we connect being conservative with being Christian. That is, we talk like we expect folks who are conservative to act “Christian”. As an example, the comment about Hannity. Christians are for the most part conservative, but the great majority of Conservatives are probably not Christian.

Thank you! Agree completely. And I would go further to say that it is some Christian's obligation to explain it to her – our Lord is NOT pleased with Christians exploiting her politically.

      Margot,

For some reason the link you provided didn’t work. Do you know what month/year that particular show aired so I can find it? (Don’t you just love Chris’s sermon’s reviews?)
