WORLD: Tebow and “one-truth evangelical campaigns”

World has an interesting article on sports world’s understanding of evangelical exclusivity.

Not too long ago we talked about Tim Tebow, quarterback for the University of Florida, as we responded to some Sports Illustrated “letters to the editor” critics of Tebow’s evangelism – specifically, Tebow’s belief in the exclusivity of Christ.

Well, the cat came back.

USA Today published its Monday religion column, “The Forum,” with today’s topic centering on the exclusivist-evangelistic beliefs of athletes.

  1. I'm really not just trying to promote my own blog, but my recent post comes at this whole story from a different angle. If you are interested, please read it at http://www.russellmckinney.com. There's just too much to say in a comment box.

I appreciate where Tebow is coming from. He is in a 'can't win' situation. He is lambasted by the world for believing in Christ and all that Christ taught and he is looked at warily by Christians who say that he is a celebrity and anyone who wins can easily praise God.

If Mr. Tebow is real (and I believe he is), he will praise God and teach Christ whether he wins or loses. He has been given an audience because he is a winner. Sure, people can miss the point and be jealous of this but Tebow is only doing what he has the ability to do…he is making the most of his platform.

It is also true that, once Tebow fades from public view, no one will care what he believes. Then he will move to another platform and proclaim Christ. I see this as blooming where you are planted. Currently, he is planted in the spotlight. If someone else is not planted in the spotlight, it does not mean they are less significant to God. It just means they have another place from which to bloom.

I realise the worldly-minded will usually miss the real message and see a 'if I add this Jesus to my efforts, I can become rich' message instead. This is not Tebow's fault. This is just how the unregenerate mind works. Still, we have to proclaim from the platform given to us.

I have a small platform located at http://www.truthinator.wordpress.com . I do not try to compete with Crosstalk. I mainly have a Bible study with some Op-Ed tossed in. Let's all work together and not produce collateral damage. I am glad Tebow is in the public view. If God redeems a man, the man will be true in good times and bad…God's power is to be credited!
